About Us
The Mehta Family School of Sustainability at IIT Indore is a visionary initiative established through the generous endowment of the Mehta Family, driven by a deep commitment to
fostering sustainable development through cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary education, and
impactful community engagement. The School embodies the principles of innovation,
inclusivity, and sustainability, aligning with national priorities and global commitments such as
the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As one of the newest and most forward-looking academic entities at the Indian Institute of
Technology Indore, the School brings together experts and students from diverse
disciplines—engineering, science, social sciences, economics, and policy—to collaboratively
address complex environmental, social, and technological challenges. With a strong emphasis on
systems thinking and solution-oriented research, the School aspires to become a leading hub for
sustainability science in India and the Global South.
The Mehta Family School of Sustainability offers specialized academic programs, hosts
collaborative research centers, and actively works with industry, government, and civil society to
design and implement scalable sustainability solutions. Its areas of focus include climate change
adaptation and mitigation, circular economy, sustainable energy systems, natural resource
governance, environmental justice, urban resilience, and sustainable agriculture.
Founded in the spirit of responsibility and transformation, the School exemplifies IIT Indore’s
dedication to shaping future-ready leaders and knowledge systems for a sustainable and equitable
world.
Our Vision for Sustainability
Rooted in the three foundational pillars of sustainability — Endurability (Environment), Viability (Economy), and Equitability (Society) — the School will redefine the way we learn, innovate, and act on sustainability:
- Endurability: Reducing reliance on natural resources and curbing waste.
- Viability: Driving economic growth through green technologies and sustainable business models.
- Equitability: Ensuring fair access to resources and just distribution of climate responsibilities.
- Energy Systems and Battery Technology Powering the future with novel battery chemistries and cutting-edge renewable energy solutions for both grids and portable systems.
- Environmental Economics and Environmental Law Blending macro and micro policy research, the School will delve into sustainable energy, food, and water systems — from economic modelling to legal frameworks for decarbonization.
- Water and Climate Studies From atmospheric rivers to hydrologic extremes, the School will tackle clean water access, climate modelling, and resilience to floods and droughts.
Cutting-Edge Research in Three Impactful Domains to catalyze solution-oriented science and technology, the School will focus on three key research and innovation areas:
These domains will be strengthened through the creation of three Centres of Excellence, advancing high-impact, interdisciplinary research.
